SHENZHEN AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL 深美国际学校 Oct 24 J-Term and Middle School Parent Meeting

SAIS is pioneering a new experience this year called J-Term (short for January Term). Your students will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting two-week program from January 6-17th. We will be working with partner organizations to take students in 4th grade and up on trips lasting from 2-8 days, depending on the grade. Younger students will engage in different exciting themes and projects, and will also go on day trips around Shenzhen.

J-Term is a preview of the direction that SAIS is moving in middle and high school, as we seek to give students additional leadership and international exchange experiences. To learn more about J-Term and our plans for middle and high school, please join us from 5:30-7:00 pm on Thursday, October 24th, in the SAIS auditorium.

Also, we need to adjust the calendar to facilitate teacher planning for J-Term. Please note that Friday, December 6th will be a half day, ending at 12:30 pm.

SAIS Fall 2019 Exhibition of Learning

Shenzhen American International School will hold our Fall 2019 Exhibition of Learning on Thursday, December 12th from 5:00-7:00 pm. The Exhibition is an opportunity for our students to present their learning and understanding through demonstration and conversation.

Through events such as the Exhibition, students at SAIS develop a deeper understanding of academic content. This is because they have to talk and explain their work to others outside of the classroom, not just to the teacher who is traditionally the only adult who gives feedback to students. SAIS students also develop rich communication skills through these events.

The Early Learning Environment (ELE) curriculum combines a strong social/emotional component with high academic standards.  Using an inquiry-based, hands-on methodology, students develop their creativity and critical thinking schools.  The ELE follows the American Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts.
The SAIS K-5 curriculum follows the American Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics.  Science follows the American Next Generation Science Standards, and Social Studies follows the American Education Reaches Out international school standards.  The mathematics curriculum is Eureka Math, which is America’s top-rated mathematics curriculum.

At SAIS, we place a particular emphasis on developing strong English skills.  Instruction is highly differentiated based on the needs of each student.  Programs include Reading A-Z, Readers/Writers Workshop, Treasures, and a host of other resources.  With a student:teacher ratio of 5 to 1, we can guarantee that your child will receive special attention and service.

Project-based learning (PBL) drives the science and social studies curriculum.  Students act like real scientists, historians, and geographers as they learn the content through engaging, hands-on, real world projects.

Middle School is a time of intensifying academic rigor at SAIS.  Judo Math (developed at the famous High Tech High system) drives our mathematics curriculum, and the humanities curriculum is rich in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research.  Students continue to develop their 21st century skills through project-based learning in the areas of science and social studies.

The SAIS Preparatory Academy program helps students prepare for admission to high-quality high schools through individual project portfolios and targeted test preparation for selective high schools.

What Parents are Saying

“Responsibility is a two way process. I feel that the teachers at SAIS respect the children in the same way they would respect adults; they allow children to speak their thoughts and be taken seriously and not neglect them.”

I believe strongly in the education that has and is being provided to him.  While yes, it is true that I am a teacher there….I have stayed on as a teacher because the school learning environment is a good fit for my son.
