Introduction
In May of 2005, SAIS was established with the approval of both the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province. The mission of SAIS is to provide a fully American education for international children and their families living in China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
SAIS currently offers courses for kindergarten and grades 1-6 with an additional grade being added in each of the next two years. The secondary curriculum (grades 9-12) will be added in its entirety in the third year.
SAIS is affiliated with Lee Academy of Maine, USA (www.leeacademy.org), which was established in 1845. This unique relationship, grounded in the philosophy, relationships and expertise of Lee Academy serves students through a strong curriculum and world-class instruction. SAIS uses the proven methodologies of student-centered and differentiated instruction as well as the personal relationships of caring teachers to promote the growth of each student. We believe that all children can learn at a high level and our low student to teacher ratio (15:1) guarantees individual and small group attention. We understand and fully support the learning needs of each child.
The curriculum of SAIS is the curriculum of an excellent American school. The learning goals of the SAIS classroom are based in the Maine Learning Results, comprehensive educational standards which have garnered national attention and admiration since their inception. The SAIS curriculum teaches independent and critical thinking, problem solving, research and communication skills, teamwork, and the creative application of what is learned. Students learn and apply essential knowledge and skills for the 21st century.
Teachers at SAIS have been selected for their expertise, enthusiasm in working with children, and their understanding of how to shape learning to fit the specific needs of each child. All teachers are certified through the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Our teachers have strong content knowledge and a deep understanding of how children learn best. We understand that academic, artistic, interpersonal, and athletic performance play integral roles in developing students who can effectively utilize their learning and who are resilient, thoughtful people. Extra- and co-curricular activities are essential parts of the school day. At SAIS we understand that each student brings a unique personality and unique strengths and needs as a learner with them to school each day.
All textbooks are American and are chosen to support rigorous, essential, applied learning in a student-centered environment. Teaching methodologies, grading and data management, major formative assessment (use of Measures of Academic Progress, through NWEA) and guidance procedures are American, as well. At the high school level, credits are directly transferable between Lee Academy in the US and SAIS, facilitating the eventual college application process for each student and opening wide the opportunities for cross-cultural sharing.
Additional Benefits of an SAIS Education
SAIS sponsors distinctive summer camp opportunities each year. The school cooperates with the IAM Company to bring students together to meet and receive instruction from top NBA basketball players at camps in the US. SAIS students also have the opportunity to visit the US at the main campus at Lee Academy in Maine to continue to learn about American culture.
By bringing true American education and American educators into China, SAIS improves access to educational services for international families who appreciate the unique value of a high quality American education.
The unique link to Lee Academy serves as a medium of cultural exchange like no other. We hope and believe that, over time, friendships, cultural exchanges and more formal relationships of all kinds will flourish.
